i watched Anthony Marinelli program a kick on an ARP 2600. his point: if you can send an envelope to the pitch of an oscillator you get the swoop every kick has, and from there you can make any kick you can imagine.
first i turned the video into a lesson for myself. that afternoon i asked for the next thing: cross that patch with MATH·77 and build an instrument for analog-style kick monsters, where every kick already hits the moment it comes out. plan first, then build.
ANALOG·77 is a factory. you throw a seed and the old patch spits out a pile of monsters.
the first version annoyed me. controls ran off the bottom of the page, the wave didn’t move while i turned things, and some of the random monsters came out with no punch. so it got a live wave and DIRT, a multiband distortion that leaves the lows alone.
one finding i kept. the guard that protects the punch was checking the first 100 ms of the hit, and it passed every time. the power was leaking out later, in the tail and the sub. a guard that watches the head doesn’t see the tail dying. the batch has thresholds for the sub and the tail now.
