morning, no sleep, and i typed the angriest question of the month. why do i have a great kick generator and no generator for dirty industrial synths or hard broken percussion?
LAB·77 exists to test one hypothesis: can these machines make sounds nobody else has, with the distortion and the dirt already in them, for more than kicks. i asked for no design at all. a couple of parameters at most, and pure random. i only wanted to know if it’s possible.
so it’s a bench. you throw random settings at a voice and listen for whether that corner of sound is worth building a real instrument in. percussion, synths, hats, metal. the first percussion kept coming out as laser blasters.
what passed went into SET·77 the same morning.
two weeks later i came back and said there’s still a lot of crap in here. the last thing i worked on before stopping was rules that keep the weak rolls out.
