THIS WEBSITE IS A PURE EXPERIMENT, SELF-EXPRESSION

a voice that falls apart into a synth

idea i want to build a track around. a vocal line runs normally, and then one tiny piece of it, a single letter, a slur between two vowels, gets grabbed and looped. that loop turns into a synth. pad, lead, whatever it wants to be. it lives for a few bars, develops, then the loop lets go and the voice finishes the sentence like nothing happened.

you don’t hear two layers, voice plus synth. you hear one material falling apart into molecules and assembling back.

granular is the obvious route. grains of 10 to 100 ms, pitch and speed and scatter per grain. granite, mangle, portal, ribs. or a live looper with pitch tracking if you’d rather play it than program it. the texture isn’t the hard part, the timing is: the grab and the release have to be automated to the bar, otherwise it’s just a glitch sitting in the middle of a take.

best place for it is transitions. last syllable of a verse stretches into a pad that holds tension for four bars and resolves on the first line of the chorus. or a shout that pitches up into the drop.
