fifth session. hypnotic techno, percussion, and generative logic.
this is why you start with kicks and drums, not with synths. once the atmosphere is there, building the groove under it is genuinely harder. when the kick and percussion come first, everything else — synth patterns, note ranges, overall mood — starts to suggest itself. the tonality of a track often becomes obvious only after the drums are locked.
for percussion, two sources: ready loops and generated material. ready loops: pick something that gives the track its character — could be almost pure noise, could be textured metal. right away: low-cut EQ, ducking under the kick, clip or clipper if needed, level match by peak. in a good pack the samples are already treated, clipping is minimal. if you pull random material, run the clipper first before anything else.
second channel: noise-based percussion synthesized in serum. take the noise oscillator, route it through the filter, hang an LFO on the cutoff with a broken or stepped shape. it starts moving rhythmically without touching a single MIDI note. add distortion in the FX section, put a second LFO on the distortion amount — that gives accents. a slow third LFO on pitch or cutoff over 8 or 16 bars gives the thing a life arc. this is basically how hypnotic techno works: the melody is not in the notes, it’s in the behavior of the sound. filter movement, pitch drift, density, envelope length — that’s where the feeling lives. on modular this all runs through sequencers and LFOs because there’s no piano roll. in serum you can get to the same place.
a useful generative approach with sting-type devices: samples are mapped across keys, the device picks from whatever range it lands on. shifting the pitch shifts which samples get selected — the sequence stays similar in logic but the material inside it keeps changing. pull that pitch range, density, note length, and sequence position out into macros, hang an LFO on each, and you have a machine that makes percussion that never quite repeats. about saturation as a loudness tool: saturation can drop the peak level by several dB while making the sound feel twice as loud. perceived loudness goes up, peak goes down, the hit reads cleaner in the mix. this is how you make percussion cut without just cranking gain.
for live prep: generated material should be printed to audio. run the generative rack, record the output, crop out the good parts, treat them as finished samples. don’t bring a heavy unstable plugin chain into a live session if you can avoid it. the exception is if the generative thing is light enough and you want live control over it.
one concrete issue: ODS kick generator sounds beautiful on its own but when layered and sent through compression it starts floating — the attack varies hit to hit, the compressor reacts differently each time, the whole group shifts. what you hear on the waveform keeps changing. working with it in a full chain becomes unreliable. solution: record it, pick the cleanest take, use that audio file going forward.
clip launch quantization in ableton: with 1-bar global quantization set, a clip waits for the next bar boundary before it starts, no matter when you press the button. this means you can hit early and it still lands in the right place. the clip view shows a countdown so you can see exactly when it will fire. removing quantization is for when you want to finger-drum or trigger freehand — not the default.
follow actions: after a clip finishes, tell it what happens next. play again, go to the next, go to any, stop. you can also set it to random across a group of clips. this turns a set of percussion loops into a self-randomizing system — let it run, record the output, and you get new percussion material built from your own old loops. it’s a way to mutate your library without opening a browser.
