fourth session. sample pack organization, rumbles, and a phase trap.

first thing: leveling the whole kick pack with a clipper. find the quietest usable kick, use the clipper to just catch the peak — barely touching the top. then match the rest to that ceiling. two to three decibels spread max. don’t cut too hard or you kill the transient character.

when saving samples: always crop the clip before dragging it out. serum adds a tiny silence at the start when playing samples internally — if you save without cropping, that silence ends up in the sample pack and causes misalignment later. crop, then save.

rumble chain from scratch: kick goes into a delay (off-beat repeat), then into convolution reverb with a short room or resonant impulse. that gives the rumble its low shape. then utility — bass to mono, around 120–280hz. then saturator to thicken. then sidechain from the kick so the rumble ducks on the hit.

to balance kick and rumble: put something like saturn on both tracks, isolate just the low end — 0 to 120hz. listen only to that band. get the rumble about 3dB quieter than the kick in that range. then remove the isolation. if the rumble is still too present in the mids, cut there. don’t touch the low balance you just set.

the linear phase EQ moment. we kept losing the sub after EQing the layered kick. turned out the zero latency mode was rotating the phase of the low end — the layers were partially canceling each other. switching to linear phase kept the phase intact. waveform before vs after: completely different. the bass came back. rule going forward: when EQing anything with low-end layering, linear phase.

folder structure for the sample pack: kick, rumble, kick+rumble. nothing more granular than that. MSE said the live set will be 6–7 channels: kick+rumble, percussion, hat, ride, two synths, atmos/fx. we’ll start building scenes once the sounds are ready.
